Panel Discussion

PEN Berlin was founded, as you may know, in June 2022. While they do carry Berlin in their name, well over half of the approximately 700 members live throughout the country, some even in Austria and Switzerland.
PEN Berlin has two main tasks: they advocate for persecuted authors – often in the form of practical solidarity, enabling these colleagues to find exile in Germany. They also advocate for freedom of opinion, press, and art in Germany.
In this area fell the highly noted and praised discussion series on democracy and freedom of expression, held last year under the title “Surely we can still say that” at 37 locations in Saxony, Thuringia, and Brandenburg.
The twist: The audience was not to listen in reverent silence to the literati, journalists, artists, and scholars on the podium for 90 minutes before being allowed to ask two or three questions just before the end. Rather, the audience was – as was already made clear in the announcement – a main actor of the evening.
We want to build upon that now. We aim to maintain the tried-and-true participatory core, but we plan to vary some aspects – one shouldn’t repeat oneself – foremost the theme, which this time will be: Conversations about democracy and homeland, with a range from “Is this already my country?” to “Is this still my country?”.
