Picture and Story Theater
The Kamishibai – literally translated "paper theater" (kami = paper, shibai = theater) – originated in Japan. This picture theater or "story theater" has a long tradition here and is a special form of storytelling.
It consists of picture cards on which the individual scenes of a story are illustrated. The picture cards are presented in a stage-like frame. Throughout the narrated story, one picture after another is shown. The standing images can be viewed peacefully on their own. Meanwhile, a person narrates the story. The focus is on the visually depicted core of the spoken words. The storyteller stands next to the frame and addresses the audience directly. They engage in conversation through the picture cards, and the audience is actively involved in the events.
Telling stories with the Kamishibai has a high value for children's development. The illustrated stories stimulate creativity and imagination and contribute to a rich vocabulary. While television and cinema expose children to rapid sequences of images, they have enough time in "theater without electricity" to look closely and immerse themselves in the events of a story.
The Kamishibai is used for creative language and literacy development in nurseries, kindergartens, or schools. It helps to learn holistically, to narrate based on images, to develop one's imagination and personality, as well as to structure and visualize content, and it promotes concentration and communication skills.
