With an auction, a couple is chosen who will represent the runner and the collector this year. The two must then take care of the 104 eggs needed for the competition: They therefore go through the whole village, introduce themselves to the people of Schönecken, and collect egg donations from the residents. On Easter Monday around noon, 104 raw eggs are laid out in sawdust at a distance of one ell, which is 62.5 centimeters.
The collector must pick up the 104 eggs individually, with his longest distance measuring 65 meters. In total, he covers 6.9 kilometers, which includes bending down, picking up, turning, continuing to run, and placing the eggs into the collection basket 104 times.
The runner sets off towards the neighboring village of Seiwerath and back. He has to cover about 7.6 kilometers and must overcome a height difference of 122 meters. In Seiwerath, his presence is confirmed with a short note. He then runs back towards Schönecken. A spokesperson informs the audience about the current interim results. Whoever of the two completes their task first is the winner of the egg laying.
For the bachelors, the victory is not as important as the fact that they have participated actively in the egg laying at least once. The day concludes with an award ceremony and a festive parade through the village, followed by dancing in the evening, where the collector and the runner are honored with a dance. After the usually extravagant celebration of the egg laying, the main characters, the collected eggs, find their abrupt end in the bellies of the bachelors on Easter Tuesday.
The celebrations begin on Easter Sunday with the Easter concert at FiF. In the evening, a party takes place.
The program on Easter Monday starts at 9:00 AM with the church service of the clubs, featuring the music band Schönecken. The traditional egg laying begins at 2:00 PM.
