Picture and Story Theatre
The Kamishibai – literally translated "paper theatre" (kami = paper, shibai = theatre) – originates from Japan. The picture theatre or "story theatre" has a long tradition here and is a special form of storytelling.
It consists of picture cards on which the individual scenes of a story are illustrated. The picture cards are presented in a framework resembling a stage. As the story is told, one picture after another is shown. The stationary images can be viewed quietly, one at a time. Meanwhile, a person tells the story. The focus is on the pictorially presented core of the spoken words. The storyteller stands next to the frame and addresses the audience directly. Through the picture cards, they engage in conversation, actively involving the audience in the unfolding events.
Telling stories with Kamishibai has great value for child development. The illustrated stories stimulate creativity and imagination and contribute to an extensive vocabulary. While television and cinema films confront children with rapid image sequences, in "cinema without electricity" they have enough time to look closely and immerse themselves in the narrative of a story.
The Kamishibai is used for creative language and reading promotion in nurseries, kindergartens, or schools. It helps to learn holistically, tell stories using images, develop one's own imagination and personality, structure and visualize content, and promotes concentration and communication skills.
