Picture and narration theater
Kamishibai – literally translated as "paper theater" (kami = paper, shibai = theater) – originally comes from Japan. The picture theater or "narration theater" has a long tradition here and is a special form of storytelling.
It consists of picture cards that illustrate the individual scenes of a story. The picture cards are presented in a stage-like frame. During the narrated story, one picture after the other is shown. Each of the still images can be viewed calmly on its own. Meanwhile, a person recounts the story. The focus is on the visually represented core of the spoken words. The storyteller stands beside the frame and addresses the audience directly. Through the picture cards, they engage in conversation, and the audience is actively involved in the events.
Telling stories with Kamishibai has great value for children's development. The illustrated stories stimulate creativity and imagination and contribute to a rich vocabulary. While television and cinema expose children to rapid sequences of images, they have sufficient time during "cinema without electricity" to look closely and immerse themselves in the events of a story.
Kamishibai is used for creative language and reading promotion in nursery, kindergarten, or school. It helps learn holistically, tell stories based on images, develop one's own imagination and personality, as well as structure and visualize content, and promotes concentration and communication skills.
