Picture and storytelling theater
The Kamishibai – literally translated as "paper theater" (kami = paper, shibai = theater) – originates from Japan. The picture theater or "story theater" has a long tradition here and is a special form of storytelling.
It consists of picture cards, on which the individual scenes of a story are illustrated. The picture cards are presented in a stage-like frame. As the story is told, one picture after another is shown. The standing images can each be viewed calmly on their own. Meanwhile, a person narrates the story. The focus is on the pictorial representation of the core of the spoken words. The storyteller stands next to the frame and addresses the audience directly. Through the picture cards, they engage in conversation and the audience is actively involved in the events.
Telling stories with the Kamishibai has a high value for children's development. The illustrated stories stimulate creativity and imagination and contribute to an extensive vocabulary. While television and cinema films expose children to rapid sequences of images, "cinema without electricity" gives them enough time to look closely and immerse themselves in the events of a story.
The Kamishibai is used for creative language and reading promotion in nurseries, kindergartens, or schools. It helps to learn holistically, to tell based on images, to develop one's own imagination and personality, to structure and visualize content, and to promote concentration and communication skills.
