Glühende Chemie

SFZ-Schülerforschungszentrum

Set out to produce iron here in the Eifel, following the example of our ancestors, using self-built furnaces with iron ore and coal. In exciting experiments in the microwave, glass beads are "melted" from glass powder or brass.

Workshop

It glows and sparks fly – It is always fascinating when very high temperatures are reached during chemical reactions. In this workshop, molten pig iron is produced in a self-built furnace made of firebricks.
Beautiful glass beads can be created from white powders in muffle ovens and microwaves; by adding different salts, they can also be colored vibrantly. Temperatures are generated that are sufficient to melt metals together for the production of brass nuggets.
In this workshop, chemistry truly showcases what it can do. Sign up and join us!

Participation possible from the 6th to 9th grade.
