Amid rocky cliffs, blossoming forests, and teeming nature
Schönecker Schweiz in the Kalkeifel is an impressive nature reserve and a popular destination for hikers. You’ll find striking rock formations, diverse forests, and rare plant and animal species.
As you hike through Schönecker Schweiz, you’ll repeatedly discover unique formations such as rock crevices and hidden caves, including the well-known “Hohl-Ley” cave. Streams wind through the landscape, creating a peaceful, unspoiled atmosphere. Beautiful views of the surrounding countryside open up before you time and again.
Schönecker Schweiz is at its most beautiful in the spring: early bloomers and wild herbs like snowdrops, wild garlic, and wood anemones transform the forest floor into a carpet of flowers. Nature slowly comes to life. With a little luck, you’ll find rare wild orchid species in early summer.
Schönecker Schweiz is ideal for anyone looking to discover a special piece of nature in the Prümer Land region. Whether for a day trip or a longer hike, the area is among the most beautiful destinations in the Eifel,
thanks in particular to its combination of rocks, forests, and unspoiled landscape.
What blooms when? In the Schönecker Schweiz region, spring brings a remarkable variety of flowers. Blooming times may vary slightly depending on the weather.
April through early May is the best time to see a sea of flowers carpeting the forest floor. May through June is particularly good for exploring calcareous grasslands and spotting orchids.
The blooming season usually begins in spectacular fashion around the end of March. Along the streams and in the forests, vast carpets of snowdrops—also known as March bells—spread out. You can experience this rare natural spectacle especially in the valleys around the Schalkenbach and Altburgerbach streams.

Spring really comes into its own starting in April. The scent of wild garlic fills many parts of the forest, while the first cowslips and pasqueflowers appear on the limestone grasslands. You’ll find plenty of spring flowers now, especially on the sunny south-facing slopes around the Schönecken castle ruins.

The variety of flowers reaches its peak in May. Hawthorns begin to bloom, and many rare orchid species appear in the forests and on the nutrient-poor grasslands. Columbines can also be admired along the hiking trails and at the edges of the woods.

In early summer, orchids are the defining feature of the landscape in Schönecker Schweiz. The warm, calcareous grasslands and open forest areas now offer ideal conditions for many specialized plant species.

When I hike through the Schönecker Schweiz Nature Reserve with the gentle llamas and fluffy alpacas and hear their soft murmurs, I forget about everyday life. And my gaze turns once again to nature’s little wonders.
Whether you go on foot or by bike is up to you.
The castle represents the landmark of our place. A walk there is always worthwhile. From here you can enjoy an impressive view of Schönecken and its surroundings.
Hidden in the middle of the forest are the three Kausbuchen, also known as Süntelbuchen, which give this circular trail its name. Short trunks, twisted and partially intertwined branches with drooping twigs and a crown that grows wide rather than high describe the Kraus beech. Find peace and quiet, recharge your batteries, let your imagination run wild - the mystical Kausbuche beech trees invite you to do just that.
Hiking, trekking over several days or beautiful events with llamas: with the "eifelnomaden" you can explore nature, slow down and be out and about with all your senses.
