Kamishibai

Zentralbücherei Prüm

7/22/26
3:30 PM

When the doors of the Kamishibai open and the picture cards become visible one by one, a very special atmosphere is created, along with the story that the storyteller presents in their personal way. The storytelling theater captivates both young and old audiences and invites them on a journey into the world of stories.

Picture and Story Theater

The Kamishibai – literally translated as "paper theater" (kami = paper, shibai = theater) – originates from Japan. The picture theater or "story theater" has a long tradition here and is a special form of storytelling.
It consists of picture cards that illustrate the individual scenes of a story. The picture cards are presented in a stage-like frame. Throughout the story being told, one picture after another is shown. The still images can be individually observed in peace. Meanwhile, a person narrates the story. The focus is on the pictorially represented core of the spoken words. The storyteller stands next to the frame and addresses the audience directly. Through the picture cards, they engage in conversation, and the audience is actively involved in the unfolding events.
Telling stories with the Kamishibai has a high value for children's development. The illustrated stories stimulate creativity and imagination and contribute to an extensive vocabulary. While television and films confront children with rapid sequences of images, in "cinema without electricity," they have enough time to look closely and immerse themselves in the unfolding story.
The Kamishibai is used for creative language and reading promotion in nurseries, kindergartens, or schools. It helps learn holistically, narrate with visual support, develop one's imagination and personality, as well as structure and visualize content, and it fosters concentration and communication skills.
