Good food and hiking: a perfect combination! Spend a fun-filled afternoon with our llamas in the nature reserve and enjoy some homemade cake along the way.
Hike
Schönecker Schweiz is a little-known but incredibly diverse nature reserve in the Southern Eifel. It is characterized by deeply carved valleys with clear streams and vast plateaus. On the valley slopes, rare orchids bloom beneath slender junipers. Incidentally, the area owes its name to the gentian, which grows here just as it does in the Alps. In the fall, the reddish-gold foliage enchants us. In the winter, snow covers the forests and harvested fields.
Our two-hour gourmet hike begins and ends directly below the Schönecken castle ruins. After an entertaining introduction, during which you’ll get to know the llamas and alpacas, we’ll set off on our tour through the “Schönecker Schweiz” nature reserve.
Right at the start, we hike down into the valley of the Altburgbach. Orchard meadows and the dark silhouettes of juniper bushes accompany us. Then we climb the “Op Ischt” ridge and let our gaze wander all the way to the Hohe Venn. A short while later, we enter the beech forest and arrive at a hidden clearing where gentian blooms in late summer. We follow the Schalkenbach as it winds its way down to the Nims and, after about an hour’s hike, reach a seating area right on the riverbank that invites us to take a break.
Here we can refuel with delicious homemade cake and enjoy coffee, tea, or cold drinks.
We sit together comfortably for about half an hour. Meanwhile, our llamas and alpacas graze on the adjacent meadow. Then we head back up into the Schönecker Schweiz and to the Schönecken castle ruins. After another hour of hiking, we return to our stable. Here, we say goodbye to our faithful companions, the llamas and alpacas.
